Ich habe gestrickt… naja, gelegentlich. Ich habe ein Laufmütze und handschuhe von Lorna’s Laces’ Solemate (in Zombie BBQ) und Miriam Feltons Rill Scarf gestrickt, aber die kurzen Winterstagen mit extrem wenig Schnee bedeutete, daß ich fast null Fotos davon gemacht habe. Schee gibt mir meine Energie im Winter.

But a finished sweater is another thing entirely.

Aber ein Pullover ist etwas ganz anders.

As soon as I saw Friday Again, I knew I had to make it. More importantly, I knew I would wear it. Most importantly, I knew which yarn I would use.

Sobald ich Friday Again sah, wusste ich ich wurde ihn stricken. Noch wichtiger, ich wurde ihn tragen. Am wichtigtsten, wusste ich ich welches Garn ich benutzen wurde.

I bought this yarn, Rowan Yorkshire Tweed, around 6 or 7 years ago. I’ve swatched for several projects with it, but nothing was right – until now. My gauge with this yarn is quite a bit different from the pattern (especially my row gauge) – I ended up making the large (with some additional adjustments for row gauge) to achieve a size between the small and the medium.

Ich have diese Wolle, Rowan Yorkshire Tweed, vor 6 oder 7 Jahren gekauft. Ich strickte Maschenproben für einige Mustern, aber keins hatte wirklich gepasst – bis jetzt. Meine Maschenzahl nit dieser Wolle ist wesentlich anders als im Muster gefördert, vor allem bei der Reihenzahl. Ich habe die große Größe (mit zusätzlich Reihen Änderungen) gestrickt, um etwas zwischen eine kleine und mittelmäßige zu erreichen.

To honor my fascination with gussets, I added tiny underarm gussets, 1inch in width by ~ 1.5″ in length”.

Um meine Fascination mit Zwickeln zu befriedigen, habe ich kleine Zwickeln (etw. 2×3 cm) in den Unterarmeln gemacht.

And the beer?

Well, I would have loved to have scored ANY beer from Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire, but that was out of the question, so I chose Sam Smith’s Nut Brown Ale, fermented in stone Yorkshire squares. A rustic beer for a tweedy sweater.

Ich hätte so gern ein Bier von Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire anschaffen können, aber so was durfte nicht sein. Deshalb habe ich Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale, fermentiert in Yorkshire Stone Squares, gewählt. Ein herbes Bier für ein legeren Pulli.

Wie ihr wisst, im letzten Jahr waren bei uns zu Hause erst drei, dann vier, und dann wieder drei Mitglieder des Haushalts. Als wir noch zu viert waren, habe ich eine Strickjacke gefertigt. Ihre Taufe traf mit einer Reise nach Dogies Lieblingsteich um ein bisschen seines Fells zu streuen zusammen.

The pattern was Peasy. Knit with Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool. My row gauge didn’t quite match the pattern, and I also wanted full-length sleeves. Oh, and the leaves needed lace at the cuffs to match the bodice.

It was Lizzie’s first time to Haystack. We got rained and hailed on, threw disk and went on hikes. I think she had a good time.

Es war das erste Mal bei Haystack Lake für Lizzie. Es regnete, und hagelte. Wir haben Frisbeescheibe gespielt und sind wandern gegangen. Ich schätzte, si hat Spaß gehabt.

Whenever we visited Haystack Lake, we’d stash a ‘good’ stick or two for the next visit. Dry sticks that would float well and were large enough, but not too large either. At the lake shore there was one in just the place we left one last year. The same one? Maybe, maybe not.

Jedes Mal als wir bei Haystack Lake waren, verstauten wir einen ‘guten’ Stock. Einen der trocken war, der git flössen wurde. Gross genug, aber auch nicht zu gross. Am Ufer des Teichs fanden wir genau so einen, genau dor wo wir einen letztes Jahr gestellt haben. Der Selbe? Vielleicht, vielleicht auch nicht. Egal.

My initial layout was done on paper, sketching and turning so that the eventual holes in the front of the piece would like up with different parts of the body, or ‘areas of malady’. The trick was that with 6 different treatment type stations, things had to be placed so that text would not overlap or be visible in another hole. It sounds simple, but with my layout, and my brain, it wasn’t.

After the first consult on my piece, I was encourage to make te volvelles larger – ending up with an 11.5″ (cm) disk. Somehow, this messed up my initial sketches and I spent way too much time in Illustrator repositioning everything and finalizing what the areas of malady would be. Eventually I wound up with a hole layout like this:

To print angled text on a flat bed press, especially the text as I needed it set, was not so easy. I could have had a zinc cut made, but that would have been too simple, surely…

A massive storm rolled through as August 28th turned into the 29th. Cracking and booming directly over our heads, it set its sights on Dogie, our tough old man. Throwing him into the seizures that affected him periodically over the last year, not just once, but 6 times during the night, we finally let him stop fighting and join the storm.

Last fall I started working on a print project. Between concept and practice, I decided a volvelle format would be ideal.

Letztem Herbst fang it eine Druckprojekt an. Als ich die Idee ausbaute, entschied ich an die Form einer Volvelle.

The project grew into two volvelles, and will grow further from here, but the first two sets are done.

Das Projekt wuchs bis zwei Volvellen, und wird noch weiter wachsen. Für’s Erste, aber, have ich die erste zwei Folgen fertig.

Was ist mir passiert? Irgendwie habe ich überhaupt keine Freizeit. Diesem Winter habe ich ein Web-projekt nebenbei angenommen und habe es sehr bedauert. Das Projekt wurde grosser und grosser, verlangt mehr und mehr Zeit, und nachher hat sich meine Bezahlung irgendwie verkleinert. Na ja, man lernt (immer wieder). Ich bin bei der Druckerei häufig zu finden und habe viel Spaß dabei, auch wenn es mir ewig nimmt um die einfachste Aufgaben zu erledigen. Und ich nehme an ein Nähkurs teil. Ach! Und ich habe ENDLICH einen Pulli fertiggestrickt…

So ist es angefangen

I saw this gorgeous, earthy, local wool at my LYS. These Jacob sheep spend their time in Stockton, Utah (about 40 miles from Salt Lake City). As soon as I saw the yarn, I knew it needed to be my next aran sweater and I started looking for a pattern.

Ich sah dieses wunderschöne, erdige, einheimische Garn bei meinem LYS. Sofort erkannte ich, dass es meinen nächsten Aranpulli werden musste. Die Jacob Schafe leben in Stockten, Utah, etwa 60km von Salt Lake City. Wir sind praktisch Nachbarn

I ended up choosing St Patrick from Lisa Lloyd’s A Fine Fleece. The smallest size, however was 40″ and although my other aran is that size, I wanted something with a shade less ease so that I could wear it more easily under coats. I removed some of the box stitch pattern on the sides, oh and then I worked it in the round instead of flat and used the saddle-shoulder join techniques from Beth Brown-Reinsel’s Knitting Ganseys book. There were more than a few moments where I worried it would be too small, or just weird.

Am Ende, wählte ich St Patrick von Lisa Lloyd’s A Fine Fleece. Aber ich wollte ihn ein bißchen enger machen da mein Celtic Dreams Pulli etw. 100cm ist und ich hätte gern einen Pulli der einfacher unter Jacken zu tragen ist. Auch entschiede ich ihn in der Runde zu arbeiten und den Schultern sie in Beth Brown-Reinsels Knitting Ganseys zu bearbeiten. Häufig befürchtete ich, daß der zu eng, under einfach seltsam, wurde.

The only odd things at the end are that there is a bit of striping in the yarn, depending how much of the white fleece was spun in in a particular section, and i should have probably modified the dropped shoulders of the pattern into more of a fitted sleeve.

Die einzige seltsame Teilen sind Streifen, die abhängig von wie viel weisses Vlies in einem Teil des Garns zu finden war erschienen, und ich hätte wahrscheinlich die Schultern mehr als geformte Schultern gearbeitet.

The beer is called Mo’Town Brown, and was brewed by a local craft brewery, Squatters. Mo’Town doesn’t refer to music here, it’s a reference to the local nickname for a Mormon, a “Mo”, which makes Salt Lake City “Mo’Town” (although anymore it would probably be more accurate to call Provo Mo’Town, as its population is much more LDS than SLC’s is, but SLC is still considered the capitol of the Mormon religion, so…).

Das Bier heißt Mo’Town Brown und wurde von einer örtlichen Brauerei, Squatters, gebraut. Der Name stammt nicht von Musik sondern von einem Spitznamen der Mormonen her. Wenn ein Mormon ein “Mo” sei, dann sei Salt Lake City “Mo’Town”. Obwohl heutzutage ist es etwas ehrlicher Provo als “Mo’Town” zu beschreiben, da einer größere Anteil ihre Bewohner LDS sind als die der SLC. Aber SLC ist immer noch als Hauptstadt der mormonischen Religion erkannt, also…

It’s 2011! After a rough 2010, i’m glad of the extra one, i believe. The year started out well, with a trip to Bryce Canyon for some cross-country skiing

2011 ist hier! Nach einem anstrengenden 2011 bin ich froh noch ein Eins dazu zu bekommen. Wir haben das Jahr mit Freude, und ein Trip nach Bryce Canyon, begrüßt.

The air was clear (which is a treat when you live along the Wasatch Front in Utah), and the temps were COLD (-15° to 15 ° F).

Die Luft war klar, ein Genuss wenn man entlang dem Wasatch Front in Utah wohnt, und KALT (-20° bis -5° C).

Lizzie joined our pack this Saturday! She is a 6.5 year old red heeler (mix?) and LOVES to play ball. We were looking for a friend for Dogie to wake him up every so often during the day and herding dogs seem to get along with other herding dogs in general. Dogie is still uncertain about the new member of the pack, but I think it will just take a little bit of time.

Wir haben ein neues Mitglied des Rudels! Lizzie ist uns am Samstag gekommen. Sie ist 6.5 Jahre und liebt das Ballspielen – obwohl es scheint sie hat bis jetzt nur mit einem Fußball gespielt.

Wir suchten ein Freund für Dogie, um ihn ab und zu während des Tages aufzuwecken und Hütehunde scheinen einander gut zu verstehen. Dogie ist noch nicht ganz überzeugt von dem neuen Mitglied des Rudels, aber ich denke es nimmt einfach ein bisschen Zeit.
