it is not an underarm gusset exposé, but a totally different sweater that i started way later than sop’s, and yet finished way before his as well. (the 4.5mm needles may have something to do with that. who knew 1.5mm would make such a big difference?).

First, the beer

Zuerst, das Bier

New to our state liquor store (as far as i know at least), I had tried a couple North Coast Brewing Company’s Beligian-style ales and quite enjoyed them. I thought the Old Rasputin’s Imperial Stout might be a nice contrast to the lighter color of the sweater, while the angora in the Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed could make the sweater very welcome on a cold Russian evening.

Here, however, it was spring over the weekend. The tulips were not killed by last week’s snow, but a cool breeze in the afternoon made the sweater still very wearable.

You may not know that flying guy is now in our backyard, after being set free from his downtown duties. Poor guy had now idea what he was getting into…

no, too much beer has NOT been had

Details/Angaben

Pattern/Muster:

Pentagon Aran Cardigan by Norah Gaughan

Yarn/Garn:

Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed

Needles/Nadeln:

4.5mm / 3.75 mm

Changes/änderungen:

Used 3-needle bind-off for the shoulders. Arms knit in the round. Would have been easy to knit the body in the round as well, but at that point i was just going to follow the pattern…

Beer/Bier:

Old Rasputin Imperial Stout, North Coast Brewing Co.

Notes/Anmerkungen

It was very easy to knit. I mostly just followed the instructions.
There was one error posted on the publisher’s site, and in my opinion there was an error in the cable chart as well – having to do with where the purl stitches should go during one section of cables in order for the seed stitch to work as charted in a later section. Other than that it was pretty mindless knitting. I tried to do something fancy with short-row shoulder shaping and then gave up on it.

and i even did a little of this:

* not sure how i feel about this, actually. So very ‘branded’. But, it can serve as a memory stick as well, and that is always a bonus. I don’t want to rely on it – I doubt i’ll use it for runs less than 12 miles or so, but i also hope i use it enough to justify spending any money at all on it.
**we went to see Zachary Ross and Barclay Martin at a friend’s house (well, at the house of a friend of a friend, actually) last friday night. Very enjoyable live. Listen to a couple tunes and see what you think…
*** Guster is one of my favorite bands – live or otherwise (by that i mean recorded, not dead).

for the past few months, our lives have been dominated by flying objects.

SOP was one of the artists chosen to produce a sculpture along the theme of flying objects. Rather than try to tell you about his piece,

let me show you the maquette:

the final sculpture is 9 ft x 9 ft and will be on a 14 ft pole. We’ve fiberglassed the body (please let me know if you are interested in seeing pictures of that process) and sop has now shaped the engine cowls:

think he is happy about this?

the cowls are steel, with brass tips. They will be chromed, as will the front cones for the propellors:

not for traffic

It’s been a long process, much more for sop than for me of course. Although i helped him with the fiberglass (and was dehydrated for a week from the chemicals), mostly it has been just him – pretty well every evening and weekend.

Can’t wait for this to be done. There are 12 sculptures total (3 others from people we know well) and some very cool ideas. The sculptures will be placed at various locations throughout salt lake city for 2 years. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures at the unveiling. I’m getting pretty excited.
