It's bottom up and then top down, i suppose. hahaha. you start at the bottom of the body - i used an overlapped welt with doubled yarn to make it extra sturdy. Then you work up to the armholes (adding the underarm gussets at the appropriate point), split and work front and back to shoulders. Then if you are crazy like me, you work the front and back of the turtleneck as well. (Normally you would pick up those later with the rest of the the neck to work your collar in the round.) Then you, or I, do a provisional cast-on and pickup the stitches from the shoulders to form shoulder straps (I also worked neck gussets on this sweater). When you reach the end of the shoulder, you pick up stitches around the front and back and the first part of the underarm gusset for the sleeve and knit that down to the cuff - two of those and you just have a few ends to weave in and you are done!

Whew!

Is this thing top-down, or are you having to line things up all over and then sew them together?
He has really neat ears, by the way.
