the quandary
I need some projects, knit projects that is. I am coming close to being done with this:
and i am still working on this vest.
And i am thinking about doing the swallowtail shawl from IK Fall with this:
misti alpaca
as well as making some more of the spider beanies to sell to raise money for next year’s MS150 ride.
So you might wonder why i think i need projects. The thing is, as you may have noticed, all these projects actually require one to pay attention to one’s knitting. I need a project that is 1) portable and 2) brainless, but not TOO brainless that I am too bored with it to actually work on it.
“How about socks,” I hear a few people ask (actually, i probably only hear myself ask this, but let’s not split hairs here). Well, i have been less than excited about the socks i’ve knit. I like my socks SNUG and i just haven’t been able to duplicate the snugness i like in a sock that i can actually pull on. If you have suggestions, for socks as well as projects in general, i’d be interested in hearing them.

Love the sweater. What pattern is it?
As for socks, have you tried something that is ribbed for the entire leg and on the instep stitches. I think a 3k1p rib is nice.
Then there are always garterlac washcloths. Mittens. Gloves. Earwarmers. Felted slippers.

I’ve been thinking about portable projects too. I’m a teacher, and I like to knit during my lunch duty - it keeps me from going insane (I LOATHE lunch duty, but we’re required to pitch in) and it amuses the kids. I’ve been thinking about making a bottom-up raglan or yoked sweater (would be my first of that particular construction) - it would be portable at least until the pieces need to be joined. I’d probably do mine in stockinette or a VERY easy textured pattern, since most of my attention needs to be on the kids, and not my hands.
I’m not ready to commit to socks, even though they are so portable… I should really use some of my stash, and the heel and toe parts seem not-mindless-enough. Someday I probably will try, but not yet.

I agree your sweater looks fabulous! My mindless project for the summer has been the evil addictive ballband washcloth. I’m afraid to look in the closet for fear hundreds will come pouring out. I know you’ve made one, you must be immune to its mind control.
