a random picture from 2001:

running

maybe not so random. The shots taken from my bike are, in a way, inspired by this image, and another one that goes with it. The scan is not great, but there is a playfulness and feeling to this image that is always in the back of my mind. A theme i need to explore?

premiere sweater progress

Friday, June 16th, 2006

okay, i admit, i have made SOME progress on my premiere sweater.

the back and maybe a third of the front?

I have loved working with this yarn (color 5272 celedon). I hope i love wearing it. The pattern (from Classic Elite’s Boathouse booklet) uses a simple cable and lace pattern that can be done without a cable needle. Well, I can do it without a cable needle which means that no more than 2 stitches are ‘free’ at any one time. Technically, the aran i am working on could also be done without a cable needle, but not by me.

Help me help fight MS

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

I hate asking for money - even when it is for a good cause. But, today I need to ask anyone who can to help with a cause that is important to me - MS.

I am so very lucky. I am able to run, ski, bike, walk, see… and i have every reason to believe that i will be able to do these things tomorrow.

I have a friend who is not so lucky. Five years ago he was diagnosed with MS. It’s in remission now, but he never knows how it will manifest itself when it comes back. Will he still be able to backpack and bike? Will he be able to see so that he can work?

I had a friend whose father was not so lucky. He lost his business, his vocation, his motivation. There has been a lot of progress since he was diagnosed, but MS is still not curable.

This winter we started a bike team at my side job, Brighton Resort, to raise money for the National MS Society. We’re riding the Best Dam Bike Tour, which is 150 miles over two days. We’ve had bake sales (i bake a mean ginger snap), raffles and yard sales. We’ve raised a decent amount of money with a lot of hard work. And so today I decided I needed to overcome my fear of asking for money and ask any of you who are interested in helping to sponsor me in this ride. If you can pledge $10, that would be fabulous. It really makes a difference.

If you pledge more than $20, I’ll send you a dozen Gingersnap cookes, home made. Just make sure to include your email so that i can contact you to get your mailing address.

And to show you how fast i am, here’s some pictures taken while on my ride this morning:

where are the 36-hour days?

Monday, June 12th, 2006

I could do with a few more hours - especially on the weekend. Well, a few more hours in the evenings wouldn’t be bad either, just no more during the work day, please.

I have still not scanned slides. Well, i did, but on SOP’s scanner and they turned out really dark. So i need to bring them in to work and use the ‘REAL’ slide/film scanner. I will do it, really. Soon.

But this weekend we mixed up some of this for the house:

milk-and-honey
milk and honey?

Actually oil paint - pre-mixing. Yes, now that the sculpture is done, it is time to finish up the soffit and fascia. The joy! The fun! Feel free to drop by and share the experience with us!

We did find time for soome of this:

tea
tea and crumpets

Finished the last of the Girl Scout cookies on Sunday, i am sorry to say. I know it had to happen sometime, but it was still a tough time.

After tea, not wanting to start the caulking, we decided to try and sandblast two of these:

red-chair
candidate for a chair portait?

we thought we could get rid of all of this on them:

red-chair2
ooh, details…

Alas, the sandblasting medium we had was too fine and four hours later, well, we weren’t all that far. That doesn’t mean we won’t be re-doing the chairs, it just means we have to develop a new plan.

In knitting news - i have been working on my Premiere Pullover. I have even finished the back and started the front. I love the feel of the yarn (Classic Elite Premiere) and only hope that it wears well also. I’d show you pictures, but it’s not all that exciting, really. I am such a slow knitter that I really don’t wish to bore anyone with posts like, “One more quarter inch done! Doesn’t it look great?!” every week. Progress photos are great for those people who actually make visible progress, but alas, they make little sense at my pace.

desert flowers

Monday, June 5th, 2006

flowers in the desert tend to be fascinating things. Last year, Grape Holly, Buffaloberry, Orange Globe Mallow, Blue Flox, Sand Verbena - you name it - it was in bloom!

This year, with a dry winter behind them, few plants had the energy to put out a lot of blossoms. Here are a few that were putting forth some extra effort:
