winter fruit in blue glass

Sunday afternoon, sop and i went to a KCPW beer-tasting shindig at The Bayou.
The Bayou is a local private club (it’s a long story but if you are really interested in utah liquor laws, feel free to ask) with around 200 different beers: my kind of place. It is co-owned by the owner of the local homebrewing place, The Beer Nut, so there is some definite beer love going on. I’ve only been to the Beer Nut a couple of times, but they helped me make wine from the grapes in my old backyard that did not suck one bit.
We got to sample about 16(? - you expect me to remember the exact number?) different beers, tasting the differences between malty and hoppy beers, american-style, belgian-style, etc..
The beer as i remember it:
- Anderson Valley: Wheat
- a very clean, american-style wheat beer
- Ayinger Brau Weisse
- traditional german-style wheat beer. One of the best german wheats i’ve gotten in the states; i’ll be buying this one again!
- Pinkus Pils
- well, a pilsner. Less bitter than most pilsners on tap in germany, which put it higher up on my list, actually. I love pinkus’ organic hefeweizen, btw.
- Anderson Valley: Hop Ottin IPA
- i would not call myself a big hop lover, but i would still consider drinking this again. I can see it being especially nice on a hot summer day
- ?Ayinger Alt Dunkel
- i THINK we had this one. It was called “altbayerisches dunkel” (old bavarian dark beer) and was not bad, but not as high up on my list as some other darks
- Rogue: American Amber
Oh yes, very nice. I was really impressed with the rogue beers this evening- ?Rogue: Shakespeare Stout
- as i said, rogue beers went down well…
- Samuel Smiths: Taddy Porter
love the name, LOVED the beer. Not as smoky as many porters, a very clean taste- ?Sierra Nevada Pale
- Again, i THINK we had this one. SOP knew some people there who made a list of the beers, so this list may be updated…
- Spaten Optimator
- on my drink-again list. A beautiful doppelbock
- Duinen Tripel
- a sweet, citrusy, belgian tripel beer. Great at the end of a meal. I will be drinking this again
- Lindemans Frambois
- i have had this before, purchased from the local liquor store, and it is a good one. Mark pointed out that cane sugar is added to this, making it slightly more sweet than the traditional Lambec beer, but this is a great dessert beer, in my opinion
a few more images of the evening:

Our host had egged pledgers on to call with the proposal of drinking a bud light at this event if enough people pledged while he was at the station. Apparently they broke all sorts of records that hour…
