the legend of the drunken master

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

at the library the other week, perusing the dvds, i glanced upon “The Drunken Master” with Jackey Chan. “Oh!” i thought, “i love that movie!”

Being in the mood for a good martial arts flick, i checked it out and headed home. SOP, upon seeing what i grasped in my paw said, “Oh! I love that movie!” and before the night was out we settled down to watch.

Strangely, though, pretty soon i was unsure that this was the movie i found so great. Sure, it was good, but it was well, different than i remember. SOP said, “Maybe i haven’t seen this movie…”

The next day i hit imdb. Sure enough, The Drunken Master, with Jackey Chan, was not the same movie i had seen, The Legend of the Drunken Master, with Jackie Chan.

Now, what has this got to do with anything? Well, this weekend i became convinced that Teva Durham must be a drunken master knitter. Just look at this:

inside out for special effect

Over the past month of working on this sweater, there have been a multitude of times where i have thought, “Wow! Now THAT is clever!” But after sewing the whole thing up (irregular rib raglan from loop-d-loop) and laying it out to block, i saw just how clever it was. Looking at this, it can be hard to imagine it fitting any normal human being. It looks to be designed for someone with a hump and a short stubby arm on one side and an offset neck and super long arm on the other. But trust me, it looks amazing on!

Toggle closure is in the works, hopefully a live-model shot by the end of the week.

i finished these:
baby socks

guess they’ll definitely be ready for saturday.

pattern: Better than Booties, Eyelet Rib, IK Summer 2005
yarn: Cascade Fixation, color 9342
needles: brittany birch DPN, size US 1
modifications: The pattern calls for a much finer yarn, so i ended up casting on 56 stitches rather than 88 and decreasing to 28 stitches (instead of 44). Then modified the heel and toe accordingly.
comments: an quick, easy knit. As i said when i knit these for my nephew, i wish my feet were this small. - then i’d have tons of hand-knit socks.

little tiny things

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

i have a number of things i NEED to get done by the 28th of January. That means, erm, by Saturday. But let’s just say by January 28th because that sounds much farther away.

The main thing i want to get done is get two chair photographs printed, mounted, matted and framed. The Eccles Center in Ogden is having their bi-annual Black and White Statewide competition and i really would like to be in it again. What’s the holdup? Well, most of my chair images are done in medium format (6×7cm) and the lens i currently have for the enlarger will accomodate up to 35mm format. So, i’ve been printing the two (at least this makes it easy to narrow the selection down) decent chair images i have on 35mm this week and trying to get them dialed in where i want them, etc. The mounting i can do myself, and i have frames, i just need to get mats cut. Need to call my favorite framer today and see if it is possible….

The second thing to do is finish this:
baby sock

and one more just almost like it. This is from the “better than booties” pattern from interweave summer 2005. Except i used Cascade Fixation and cast on 56 stitches (decreased by 4th or so round to 28) instead of 88.

Then i need to finish sop’s sweater (just the sewing up and the toggle to go!) and i have the self-appointed (why do i do this to myself?) deadline to make a shibori object by the end of the month.

I need to get some play-time in as well. Some serious play-time.
